Step One: Take That Cricut Out of the Box 🎁

I know this sounds simple, but hear me out—this is where a lot of crafters freeze. There’s just something intimidating about opening that gorgeous machine and hoping you don’t break it.

Here’s the truth: you won’t. And even if your first setup isn’t perfect, it’s totally okay. I had to redo part of the starter project—and guess what? That’s normal.

Take about an hour, follow the official Cricut “Start Here” setup guide (it’s in the box!), plug it in, connect it via Wi-Fi, and launch Cricut Design Space. You’ll be guided through your very first project—and it’s easier than you think.

What Is a Cricut Maker, Anyway?

Think of the Cricut Maker as your new creative BFF. It’s a computer-powered machine that cuts, scores, writes, and embosses a huge variety of materials using SVG design files.

You design (or upload) in Cricut Design Space, select your material, and the machine takes care of the rest. ✂️

Materials You Can Use in the Cricut Maker

Here’s a quick rundown of just some of the materials your Maker can handle:

  • Vinyl (adhesive, glitter, chalkboard, stencil, etc.)
  • Iron-on Vinyl (HTV) – for shirts, bags, baby onesies
  • Cardstock + Paper – from copy paper to glitter to foil
  • Fabrics – cotton, felt, leather, burlap, etc.
  • Woods + Foils + Foam – balsa, chipboard, craft foam, and more

💛 Pro Tip: Practice with Dollar Tree supplies while you’re learning—cheap and perfect for trial projects.

Must-Have Tools & Blades

Let’s keep it simple. Here’s what you’ll use most often:

Blades:

  • Fine Point Blade – your go-to for vinyl and cardstock
  • Deep Cut Blade – for thicker materials like chipboard
  • Rotary Blade – for fabric and delicate materials
  • Knife Blade – for thin woods and heavy-duty projects

Mats:

  • Blue (Light Grip) – copy paper
  • Green (Standard Grip) – cardstock, vinyl (your everyday mat)
  • Purple (Strong Grip) – thick materials
  • Pink (Fabric Grip) – non-bonded fabrics

Handy Accessories:

  • Weeding tools – for vinyl designs
  • Scoring Stylus – to create crisp folds
  • Scraper – to clean your mat (avoid on pink mat)
  • Pens – for writing and drawing directly on your designs
